What Have You Done for Your Water Heater Lately?
It’s pretty darn cold here in the Midwest…almost another Chiberia and people are calling with questions about their water heaters and piping. So we thought we would share a few thoughts on how to take care of your water heater during freezing temperatures. Hot Water 911 is Chicago’s premier emergency water heater repair company and, as such, we love sharing information on what you should know about your water heater.
First let’s talk tankless!
Tankless water heaters themselves need no protection from freezing weather if the electricity and gas are working, however, if the power goes out, the heater might experience frozen water inside the system. If you add an emergency drain pipe during the installation of the tankless water heater, frozen water inside the system might be prevented. The part of the system that needs protecting are the copper pipes that carry the water and during cold water, this can be a problem. Preventing freezing requires a combination of a heat source and insulation that is called “heat tracing” a water system. You can find a very helpful “how to” insulate your copper pipes here on Home Guides.
Keeping your pipes happy!
Along those same lines, whether you have tankless or a tank type water heater, it’s really important to monitor those pipes leading to the water heater to make sure they don’t freeze. Covering your pipes with PVC foam insulation is a smart preventative measure to take. This story from the Jackson Sun tells about a worse case scenario situation with pipes in a home freezing and cracking and what measures have been taken to prevent that in the future…something we can all learn from!
Water usage…it’s an eye opener!
And then there’s how much water we typically use in our homes. We take our water supply and our water heaters for granted until something happens to them. Then we realize how important water and hot water are in our lives. Look at this chart from Energy.gov and see where you might be able to cut back on your water use/waste!
Above all, stay warm and safe!
Hot Water 911 is here to answer and serve all of your water heater maintenance and emergency repair issues. Give us a call at 1-800-GO HOT WATER or email us at info@HotWater911.com and always know that

Water Heaters Warm the Heart
We are overcome with gratitude as the New Year gets underway. We have two exciting gifts to share with you that absolutely warm our hearts. It occurs to us who slog around the Hot Water 911 boiler room each day that there is an awful lot of kindness going on out there that needs to be acknowledged. At the end of the day, it’s not about being Chicago’s premier water heater repair service. It’s about all of our valued customers, vendors, friends and team. If it weren’t for each of them, Hot Water 911 would be nothing.
So, what are the gifts?
Last Sunday, the Going Home with Tony radio show featured guest Nick Wernimont, Founder and CEO of Factor 75, a fabulous healthy, nutritious and delicious meal home delivery company. Nick is brilliant in all things related to healthy eating and we got an amazing number of emails and calls regarding this show. As if THAT wasn’t enough warm fuzzies, Nick generously shared a link to all of our Going Home with Tony listeners that allows them a very amazing opportunity to try Factor 75 and have amazing food delivered right to the door. If you click on this link, you can take advantage of Nick and Factor 75‘s generosity and kindness! You won’t be sorry that you gave this wonderful company a try!
That’s not all!
Yesterday, we got an email from our friends at Fix It Home Improvement (which you can find on YouTube by clicking on the name). Not only does Jacy Elsesser create fabulous videos for his YouTube channel that teach you all kinds of home repair and home improvement techniques and tricks, but he also hosts a weekly podcast along with his co-host Cindy that is broadcast on iTunes and Stitcher. This week, Jacy was kind enough to talk about Hot Water 911 and how we were part of his recent video on water heater gas valve replacements (check that video out here). We were honored to be part of this great video and even more touched that he took some time saying some really nice things about our company on this latest podcast which is all about Ice Melt systems. If you click here, you can listen to this very thorough and helpful podcast about Ice Melt systems AND here some kind words about Hot Water 911.
Kindness matters!
So, while water heater repair and maintenance is what we do and what we are passionate about, it turns out that there is so much more to life…it turns out that it’s really all about kindness. So, thank you Nick and thank you Jacy for your support and your acts of kindness.
Turns out water heaters CAN warm the heart!
